World Day Against Child Labour
12 June 2024
Today is World Day Against Child Labour, a time to raise awareness and take action against child exploitation.
According to the International Labour Organization (ILO), an estimated 160 million children aged 5 to 17 are involved in child labour worldwide. That's almost 1 in 10 children globally. Of these, nearly half are engaged in hazardous work that endangers their safety, health, and moral development.
Child labour deprives children of their fundamental rights to education, health, and a childhood free from exploitation. It perpetuates the cycle of poverty, impacting not only the children but also their families and communities.
While much progress has been made in reducing child labour over the years, recent years have seen global trends reverse, and, now more than ever it is important to join forces to accelerate action towards ending child labour in all its forms. Here’s three simple ways you can take action:
· Support Ethical Practices: Choose companies and products with a clear commitment to ethical sourcing and child labour prevention.
· Raise Awareness: Share information and stories about child labour to educate others and inspire collective action.
· Advocate for Change: Support legislation and initiatives that aim to eliminate child labour and promote children's rights.
Every child has the right to grow up in a safe environment, receive an education, and have the opportunity to pursue their dreams.
